The 80/20 email rule I learned the hard way 🙈

✨Too busy to read today? Jump to the bottom for the speedy rundown.✨

Reader,

Have I told you about my first test project as a brand new copywriter – back in 2022? 🙈

Before I get into it, picture this:

👩🏽‍🏫 A woman in her late 20's – fresh out of teaching

👩🏽‍🎓 A student again – new to the copywriting world

💁🏽‍♀️ An un-learner of the "should's" – just barely getting her typing fingers ready...

Got that visual?

Bueno.

During that test project, I spent THREE WEEKS perfecting an email sequence for a client.

✓ Beautiful design elements

✓ Strategic copy

✓ Perfect button placement

I was so proud of how “professional” everything looked.

And then… crickets. 🦗

The open rates were decent, but engagement was flat and conversions?

Almost non-existent.

**Insert awkward silence when your mamá doesn't respond to you after you say the last word...**

Has something similar happened to you?

You spend hours perfecting something, only to get mediocre results?

That’s when I felt that gasps in Spanish feeling deep in my throat...

I’d fallen into the classic trap of focusing on the 80% of work that produces only 20% of the results.

Let me introduce you to the Pareto Principle (a.k.a. the 80/20 rule), amiguis.

Las vibras: In email marketing, 80% of your results come from just 20% of your efforts.

But here’s what most “experts” won’t tell you…

The 20% that matters has very little to do with fancy design or “professional” formatting.

What actually moved the needle when I revised that failing campaign?

Three simple shifts:

1️⃣ We stripped back the fancy design and made it feel like a message from a friend. (People engage with people, not pretty marketing)

2️⃣ We cut the options down to ONE clear call-to-action (decision fatigue is real, ya'll)

3️⃣ We let the client’s actual personality shine through instead of using “marketing speak” (including their occasional Spanglish, just like I do with you)

Here were the results:

Open rates jumped from 35% to 49%, and conversions went from practically zero to 5.2%.

All from focusing on the right 20%.

This is the exact framework I use with all my clients (the visionaries) now, and it’s what I implement in my V.I.B.E. Retainer package.

One of my clients put it perfectly:

“It’s like I finally have permission to be myself in my marketing. I’m writing less but connecting more.”

💡 Here’s what this means for you:

You know that feeling you have that your marketing should be more “you” but you’re scared to fully embrace it?

That’s actually your business intuition telling you something importante.

When you focus on:

✅ Authenticity over perfection – Like starting your emails with a personal story before getting into your main topic

✅ Connection over fanciness – What can your gente vibe to? Include it!

✅ Clarity over options – don't make 'em feel confused...

That’s when the light bulb goes off.

So, te pregunto (let me ask you):

What’s one way you could simplify your email marketing this week to focus on genuine conexión rather than perfection?

Reply and let me know – I read every message and would love to hear your thoughts.

Or if you’re thinking “this sounds great but I don’t have time to figure out which 20% actually matters in my business”… let’s get on that cafecito chat.

My V.I.B.E. Retainer might be exactly what you need.

Let’s Chat About Email Strategy

P.S. Next week I’m talking about a controversial topic that might bring about some whispers (like your tias at the fiesta) in the marketing world… why the concept of the “multicultural” ideal client is completely backwards.

Tune in, ya'll!

💨 Speedy Rundown, porque andamos ocupados! 💨

(We busy)

Stop obsessing over perfect emails - focus on the 20% that actually drives results. Strip back fancy designs, use ONE clear call-to-action, and let your real personality shine through. Your authentic voice matters more than "professional" language - your people connect with humans, not brands.
