Reader,
Do you find it hard to show up for your business sometimes?
This past weekend I did my best to be present con mi esposo (my husband), but the world's harsh realities kept pressing on me...
We were trying out a new lunch spot — chatting about the usual.
🐩 Coco, obviously.
👨🏽 Upcoming events, like Father's Day.
🏖️ And some summer must do's in San Diego...
But then the conversation shifted.
I got a text from one of my best friends who mentioned how her familia is scared to even go to the grocery store right now because of what’s happening in LA.
Las vibras got heavy — we were both thinking the same thing but didn't know what to say.
I then text mi mamá because moms always know what to say.
She said: “Mija, when the world feels like this, we still have to show up for our people. That’s how we take care of each other.”
The reality: Sometimes showing up looks different than we planned.
I’ve been sitting with that all weekend, mi gente.
Because here I am, trying to write about copy strategies and business growth while my heart feels heavy watching what’s happening to our communities.
And I know some of you are feeling this too.
So here’s what I want to share with you:
Your copy doesn’t have to be “business as usual” when the world isn’t business as usual.
In fact, the most connecting copy I’ve seen lately acknowledges where people actually are — not where we think they should be.
How to Write Copy When Your Heart Isn’t in “Business Mode”
1️⃣ Give Yourself Permission to Acknowledge Reality
Instead of pretending everything is normal, try:
- “I know this might not be the right time for you to think about [topic], and that’s okay.”
- “If you’re feeling heavy right now, you’re not alone in that.”
- “This feels small compared to everything happening, but maybe that’s exactly why it matters.”
2️⃣ Focus on Service, Not Sales
Ask yourself: “How can what I offer actually help my people during this time?”
- Can your coaching help someone feel more grounded?
- Does your product create moments of joy or ease?
- Can your service free up mental space for what matters most?
3️⃣ Use “And” Instead of “But”
Instead of: “I know things are hard, BUT let’s talk business…”
Try: “I know things are hard, AND taking care of your business is one way to take care of your family.”
This validates both realities instead of dismissing one for the other.
Here’s what I'm trying to get at — people don’t need you to be tone-deaf to current events. They need you to be human while still offering what they need from you.
Te pregunto (question): How are you navigating showing up for your business while honoring what your heart is feeling right now? I genuinely want to know because I think we’re all figuring this out together.
Reply and let me know. Your thoughts matter, especially right now.
P.S. This is exactly some of the the conversations I want to have in my Human First Copy Co-op — how do we create copy in our business that serves our communities meaningfully? If that resonates, I’ll be sharing more details soon.
P.P.S. Did someone forward this email? Welcome! I’m glad you’re here. You can subscribe here, visionary.

(We busy)
- Sometimes showing up for your business means acknowledging when the world feels heavy instead of pretending everything is “business as usual”
- Your copy can connect more deeply when it meets people where they actually are, not where you think they should be
- Three ways to write authentically during difficult times:
1) Give yourself permission to acknowledge reality
2) Focus on service over sales
3) Use “and” instead of “but” to validate multiple feelings at once
- People need you to be human while still offering what they need from you
- It’s okay to navigate showing up for your business while honoring what your heart is feeling
